Jettin on the Willamette

Commentary is from the RJB message board 9/10/01

Hey, we had a great time. First off, let me say thanks to Dan and Scott for coming out. It was nice to meet and hang out with both of you. Dan(iel), 76-Spectra(scott) and I tried to hit my favorite ramp on the lower Willamette at 11:00am and got aced out by some half assed carnival that had taken all the trailer parking. Headed to another ramp, Meldrum Bar, and got in about 11:30. Went out to a lagoon to float while I waited for my buddies, notoriously late, to call for a ramp pickup. On the way down to pick them up, Dan developed this leak and had to head in. Scott followed him to make sure all was well. Dan, I am glad you got in safe. Scott and I proceeded to roost up the river for a little while but the wakes and rollers were to much for us. WAY busy out there today. So we headed back to the lagoon we were hanging out in and just let the wind push us around for a while. Scott had to call it quits and so me and my buddies just went up river to check out one of the better bikini watching areas. The views were lacking, and the river so rough that we tried to get into my usual lagoon hang out and that is when I busted the skag. Either that or on the way back out... Oh, well. I have seen enough posts here to think maybe I am OK without it. Anyway, a good time was had by all, with maybe a small exception for potential headaches that Dan and Scott have to fight.
So much for what we figured amounted to the PNW Rally. Dan has pictures and I should think we might see them in a day or two... Right Dan??

Yeah had a great time. Haven't been out in my boat all summer. Its was great meeting you guys to. Nice to hang out with other internal rotating propeller guy lovers (jets). Kinda sucked we couldn't put in at Willamette but Meldrum was fine. It was good to also hang with exp boaters. yo Martin what was up with that boat slapin around yours at the dock. Little fishing boat. Yeah had only a couple set backs. Let see first out as we were all idling out of the bar area turned on the misters and the handle came off in my friends hands. Instant squirty leak. Fixed it. Blasted up the river with out any hiccups except hit one of martins wakes and caught it side ways engine stalled. Chevy's are so cold blooded. Went into the cove with the guys and just floated for a while until our boats would touch the land then would jet back out to sit. Decided to turn on my bilge pump just to be safe and wow did it piss for awhile. About two minutes. I have really large bilge pumps to so that spooked me and the guys. Was going to do a hot holeshot, but when I slammed the throttle down the engine responded, but the jet didn't. I knew something was wrong when all the water under the boat started to just get foamy and white. After what seemed like two seconds it finally jumped up and took off. Wow is my jet adjusted wrong. While the photos were taken I was going to do a jumping 180 for the camera when in the corner the engine stalled. Funny thing about land it comes up QUICK!. No biggy as we were heading for shore restarted the engine and put it in reverse. Went around the big log 2' off of shore and idled back to our group. Started trying to figure out where the water was coming in, but didnt see any leaks or hose leaks. Then we all decided to fly up the river. It was really choppy and busy to. Then I looked back in my mirror and saw the mini rooster tail coming out the right side of my block. Stopped to see what it was and it was like a garden hose about half on. The bilge could keep up but I wasn't sure for how long. After Scott followed me back, we walked it on the trailer and headed for home. Today in pulling the starter to see if it is that freeze plug behind it and adjusting my jetovator. Was fun really hope to do it again.
