Project K50!!! Stage 1

The Axles showed up at my house late one evening. We moved it around and put it on a jack stand to start looking and what is needed to be done.

We needed to remove the drum brakes because 15" rims will not fit. To do this you have to, get this remove the axles first before the drums can come off. There is a big nut that is safety wired on the end you remove with a pipe wrench or a really big socket.

Once each axle is pulled out which it easily does., We inspected them to twist and they looked great. Here they are compared to a 12 bolt axle. It would be the one in the middle.

Picture of the drum and hub still attached. The drum unbolts from the back and the hub anbolts from the drum on the inside. A light hit with a hammer and they come free. The bearings looked great in it so we decided not to replace them.

Drum brakes backing plate. Uh this is where it got fun. The Back plate is cold riveted to the axle. We had to use a grinder and a few hours to grind them off.

Here is a picture of the drum brakes completely removed off of it. When you take the drum brakes off you shave close to 300lbs of axle weight.

Once both drum brake assembiles wer off we soaked the bolts and studs for the center section for awhile. Once this was done, We unbolted the bolts. And lift it out.

Some of the bolts are already removed. In this photo you can see the 3link and old leaf spring preches removed. To do this we cut the bolts in half as they wouldnt even budge wit ha 3' foot breaker bar and lots of soaking. Cutting them was the only logical choice.

Picture of the massive spider, carrier and gear set up this thing has. The bolts that hold everything in need to be torqued and safety wired. Torque specs is 175ft lbs.

Drum brake set up. these are massive and normally you can use them. But as we know brum brakes and mud and water do not mix well.
